Think of something you have been doing for 40 years. I have not even been alive for 40 years so I used my handheld computer that fits in my wallet to see “what happened 40 years ago?” Ironically, the first bit of information that popped up was that the world’s first personal computer, the Commodore PET, was demonstrated in Chicago and Apple Computer was incorporated. It snowed in Miami (the only time in history) the same month as the Blizzard of 1977. Star Wars was released as NASA’s Enterprise and Voyager 2 are launched. British Airways inaugurated regular supersonic Concorde service from London to New York City and young Americans wore flare jeans, just like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Many notable things happened in 1977, but for Northern Choral Society a very remarkable decision was made when Carl Bingle was hired as the 5th organist. I wonder if the hiring committee ever imagined that he would become the glue that kept NCS running consistently for 40 years. Carl’s favorite hymn carol is “O Come, All Ye Faithful”, so naturally, this will be our theme! Our program will include:
“O Come, All Ye Faithful” - arr. Carl Bingle
“Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”
“Angels We Have Heard on High”
“Gloria” - Randol Bass
“I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” - Mark Sirett
“Nant Yr Arian” (Welsh tune)
“For Unto Us a Child is Born” from Messiah - G.F. Handel
“And the Glory of the Lord” from Messiah - Handel
“The Souls of the Righteous” - Geraint Lewis
“Sanctus” - Charles Gounod
“Great Light” - Barrett/Angerman
“Adoration of the Magi” - William Wyler
“Freedom Trilogy” - Paul Halley Will you be joining us for Carl’s 40th year? Rehearsals will begin on September 24 at First Presbyterian Church, 403 Washington St., Watertown. Registration will begin at 1:00pm. Fees this year are $20 for adults, $10 for students (grades 9-12 and college with choral experience), and $30 for families. We will rehearse from 2:00 until 4:15 each week except as noted. I strongly recommend that you attend all rehearsals. In the event that a member misses more than 2 rehearsals, I will contact that member to discuss whether or not he or she will be able to contribute positively to the final performances as a result of the missed rehearsal time. Music for all of the pieces will be available for you to borrow. TAKE NOTE! If you bring a new singer to join NCS, you and your friend will each receive $5 off your registration! I would be happy to talk with and listen to anyone who is interested or maybe unsure. I try my best to be approachable and welcoming! Also, please like us on Facebook and check out our website! www.northernchoralsociety.org See you very soon!
